Semax
Semax is a synthetic heptapeptide (Met-Glu-His-Phe-Pro-Gly-Pro) derived as an analog of adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH 4-10), originally developed at the Russian Institute of Molecular Genetics and first described in 1991. This peptide rapidly elevates brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) and its signaling receptor TrkB in the hippocampus while simultaneously activating dopaminergic and serotonergic brain systems. Research demonstrates that Semax enhances learning and memory formation, produces antidepressant-like and anxiolytic effects, attenuates behavioral responses to chronic stress, and acts through melanocortin receptor modulation. Notable for its neuroprotective properties and potential to influence intracellular calcium dynamics in neurons.
