SS-31

SS-31 (elamipretide) is a synthetic mitochondrial-targeted tetrapeptide with an alternating arrangement of basic and aromatic amino acids enabling passage through blood-brain and mitochondrial membranes. Its primary mechanism involves selective binding to cardiolipin in the inner mitochondrial membrane, modulating proteins involved in ATP synthesis while exerting antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects. Research demonstrates that SS-31 reverses energetic deficits in aged mitochondria, improves skeletal muscle function and redox homeostasis, enhances adenine nucleotide translocator function, and corrects age-related kidney morphology.
